Terre Haute (/ˌtɛrə ˈht/ TERR HOHT) is a city in and the county seat of Vigo County, Indiana, United States, near the state's western border with Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 60,785 and its metropolitan area had a population of 170,943. The city is the self-proclaimed capital of the Wabash Valley. With numerous higher education institutions such as Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, Indiana State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology located in Terre Haute, the city has embraced its college town persona. Terre Haute was named the "Community of the Year" in 2010 by the Indiana Chamber and is a quarter-finalist in the America's Best Communities contest, which is a contest operated by Frontier Telephone and Dish Network. Terre Haute was the home Socialist Party of America leader and five-time presidential nominee Eugene V. Debs.
