According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, there are approximately 50,000 lakes and small ponds in US State of Ohio with a total surface area of about 200,000 acres (81,000 ha). About 2200 of these lakes are 5 acres (2.0 ha) or greater with a total surface area of 134,000 acres (54,000 ha). These 2,200 lakes include both public and private lakes. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimated (from an electronic file generated from 1:100,000 scale maps) that Ohio has 5,130 lakes totaling 188,461 acres (76,267 ha).
