Tunghai University (THU; Chinese: 東海大學; pinyin: Dōnghǎi Dàxué; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tang-hái Tāi-ha̍k) was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1955 as a comprehensive university. Moreover, Tunghai University was founded as the first private university making it the second oldest university in Taiwan. The university is located at Xitun District, Taichung, Taiwan, an urbanized area. On the grounds, Luce Memorial Chapel (designed by noted architect I. M. Pei) is a local landmark.
