The Latin Rite Catholic Diocese of Auckland is one of the two original New Zealand dioceses (with Wellington), both originally established on 20 June, 1848. Auckland became a suffragan diocese of Wellington when it became the metropolitan see in 1887. The original territory of the Auckland diocese was divided, losing a large area south of Auckland, on 6 March 1980 to form the Diocese of Hamilton.
