Oxkintok is a pre-Columbian Maya archaeological site on the Yucatán Peninsula. The site of Oxkintok is located on the northwestern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, and is situated uncharacteristically (for the region) near two other sites. The Yucatán Peninsula is part of SE Mexico, bordered on its eastern coastline by the Caribbean Sea, and the northeastern coasts by the Gulf of Mexico. Oxkintok lies 6 kilometers southeast from Maxcanu and 46 kilometers to the northeast of Uxumal, in the Puuc region. For modern day orientation, it lies 50 kilometers south of the current capital of the Mexican State of the Yucatan, Merida. The surrounding region of this part of the Yucatan is called the Puuc region, Puuc being the term for hill in Mayan. The Puuc hills extend from the southern Yucatan up to Campeche in the north and Quintana Roo in the west. These are the limits of the karstic hills in the otherwise flat landscape of the Yucatan. Research at this site is ongoing along with the interpretation of previously collected data. As with all investigations, ideas and interpretations do not always coalesce.
