Eigen-ji (永源寺) is one of fourteen autonomous branches of the Rinzai school of Japanese Zen, founded in 1361 by the lord of Ōmi province—Sasaki Ujiyori. The temple is located in modern day Higashiōmi, Shiga prefecture of Japan, and its first Abbot was the famous poet and roshi Jakushitsu Genko. It was a popular destination for members of the Five Mountain Schools of Zen during the Onin War of the 15th century. After a series of fires that burned the place down during the late 15th and first half of the 16th century, a newly installed Abbot named Isshi Bunshu restored the temple and is commonly referred to as its second founder.
