The first recorded match on the ground was in 1875, when Kent played Sussex in the grounds first first-class match. During 1875, the ground held 4 first-class fixtures for Kent. Kent would next use the ground for first-class cricket in 1892 when they played Somerset. From 1892 to 1914, the ground held 32 first-class matches. Following the First World War, Kent returned to the ground in 1920 when they played Warwickshire.
