The River Darent (see also Darenth) is a Kentish tributary of the River Thames in SE England. Bartholomew's Gazetteer (1951) demonstrates that the name Darent means "Clear Water". On the other hand, the name of Darenth Parish (through which the river flows) derives from a Celtic phrase 'river where oak-trees grow'.
