Oreston, formerly a village on the southern bank of the Cattewater, is now a suburb of Plymouth. It is recorded as Horestone on the 1591 Spry Map of Plimmouth. Famed for its limestone quarries, and the discovery of prehistoric remains of animals such as rhinos and lions, stone from which was used in the construction of Plymouth Breakwater, the name is assumed to derive from "ores town", or possibly "Hora's Tun", named after a Saxon tenant farmer who held the lease prior to the Norman Conquest. But this ex-fishing village is more than an old quarry site, in which there was ore and stone.
