It was established in 1975 and takes its name from David Talbot Rice, the Watson Gordon Professor of Fine Art at the University of Edinburgh from 1934–1972. The Gallery focuses on contemporary art exhibitions and has collaborated with some of the world's leading international artists including Rosemarie Trockel, Joseph Kosuth and Tim Rollins and K.O.S..
