Whangaparaoa College, previously called Hibiscus Coast Intermediate School and originally called Stanmore Bay Secondary School, opened officially in 2005 as the result of a merger with the Hibiscus Coast Intermediate. The founding principal was Brian O'Connell, who served until 2012. James Thomas took over the principal role in 2012, succeeding O'Connell.
