Alamo, Texas, located in the Rio Grande Valley what is nicknamed the "Land of Two Summers," is a town known as "The Refuge to the Valley" in the irrigated area of southern Hidalgo County, Texas. This town was incorporated in 1924, and it was named for the abundance of Alamo Cottenwood trees that grew on the land that was owned by the Alamo Land and Sugar Company, not for the famous "The Alamo" in San Antonio, Texas Alamo Mission, 240 miles to the north. The town is located in an area of abundant vegetable farming and citrus groves, and it is a noted winter resort/retirement town near the Mexico-U.S. border. Alamo is also one of the Rio Grande Valley's gateways to Mexico, via U.S. Route 281 and Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipasas well as gateway to the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.
