Herakleopolis (Ancient Greek: Ἡρακλεόπολις, [Μεγάλη] Ἡρακλέους πόλις ), in Latin Heracleopolis Magna, is the Greek name of the capital of the Twentieth nome (administrative division) of ancient Egypt, and located approximately 15 km west of the modern city of Beni Suef. It was called Henen-nesut, Nen-nesu, or Hwt-nen-nesu in ancient Egyptian, meaning 'house of the royal child.' During the period of Roman occupation, it was known as Ehnasya, the etymology of which can be seen in the later names of Hnas (Ϩⲛⲏⲥ) in Coptic, and Ahnas in medieval Arabic writings.
